This work traces the life of a youngest daughter in a family on the Lower East Side of New York. In the pre gentrified 90’s, I search for Glendalis’ narrative. In doing so, I became immersed in, as stated in Blind Mag, “This family which is not mine”. Shot exclusively in the fields, buildings and apartments of the Lower East Side where this family occupied a single, multigenerational cold water flat on Stanton Street. I was raised multigenerationally, too. This family echoed my own family system. I was left on my own and was very independent from a young age, just like these daughters. So, in shooting this work, it felt real and authentic. Blind Mag even referred to me as an “enfant sauvage”-wild child in English.

Even though I constructed a beatific family narrative, the 90’s were not. Crime, incarceration, gangs and death surrounded these neighborhoods. This was something I knew a thing or two about. I grew up in one of the most economically stratified cities in the country. Crime and safety was an issue for me as a youth.

Real Film

This work was shot with 120 color film. I process all my C41 film in small batches in my darkroom. I make RA4 prints to edition the work.

Medium Format

Choice of camera is as intentional as choice of subject. This particular viewfinder of the 6x9 manual camera lets me see around the 4 bright lines of the viewfinder frame. Plus, the parallax adjustment always leaves a little surprise when I’m looking at contact sheets.
