5 required skills of any destination wedding photographer

  1. A confident, high-level shooter.

  2. An experienced traveler.

  3. Drives a stick.

  4. Additional language skills.

  5. Spins magic.

Whether you’re saying “I do” on the beach or atop a mountain in Turkey like this couple did, you’ll need to hire the right photographer to capture those dreamy memories. This couple had a henna night before the wedding, and the following day their lavish celebration took place on a mountain top. There were many logistical factors in shooting this event.

The skill and confidence in of photographer are vastly important. It has to be someone who has traveled extensively, knows multiple languages and has strong location skills. In essence, they are a professional traveller in addition to a professional photographer.

As experienced destination wedding photographers, we would like to share some some tips and tricks to keep in mind. It’s important to have a connection with your photographer first and foremost. Their work has to speak to you. It needs to tell a forever story. It can also be surprisingly affordable, which is something many couples don’t realize.

Important to note, sometimes, it’s harder to connect with a photographer who’s based overseas. If you’re in search of a destination photographer who’s willing to travel, make sure they actually like to travel and do it often. Look at her Instagram or blog. She needs to have experience not just traveling, but traveling with all their gear. Then and only then can she spin her magic.

From a destination wedding photography client:

“Angela Cappetta is the BEST. When I saw her work, I fell in love and knew I had to have her. She shot our wedding and henna party in Turkey. In the months before, she stayed in good touch with me and helped me think through all the details, so by the time she arrived and I met her for the first time, she already felt like a friend! She's warm, exuberant, hilarious, and just an all around delight to have around.  She also takes charge and knows exactly what she's doing (a very good thing for a stressed bride organizing a huge wedding in a foreign country :-)

But all her lovely personal qualities aside, Angela's work is just absolutely stunning. She captures movement and texture, energy and expression, with such a beautiful, creative lushness. Her panoramic photos (shot with a custom-machined camera!) are like nothing else I've ever seen. If you want edgy, gorgeous, documentary images from your wedding, go with Angela.”
