Cash Only Energy, a Wo Hop Wedding for the Ages
Photographing in a time warp like Wo-Hop Chinatown is an absolute dream for a documentary-style photographer. But what is Wo Hop?
Wo Hop in Chinatown is a timeless culinary institution about the size of a large walk-in closet. It is known for its no-frills, authentic Cantonese cuisine served late into the night. Since 1938, this iconic eatery has drawn locals and visitors alike with its bustling atmosphere and a menu packed with classic dishes like wonton soup, roast duck, and chow mein. The unpretentious setting and consistent quality make Wo Hop a go-to spot for anyone seeking a genuine taste of New York City’s Chinatown, perfectly capturing the neighborhood’s vibrant spirit and rich cultural heritage.
The only thing that makes it even better is to have it preceded by a City Hall wedding and a walk through the neighborhood. New Yorkers love a wedding, and well wishers come in all forms. And we met many on our way through the neighborhood.
When this divine pair contacted me to shoot their City Hall ceremony followed by lunch at Wo-Hop, I submitted my estimate and prayed they’d pick me. The stairs downstairs, the dollar bills taped to the walls, and that cash-only energy. I was dreaming about all of it. Thankfully, they hired me. I let me imagine race. I was going to do the absolute best job I could for them. After all, they were making my dreams come true.
