Tree trimming has its roots in an ancient Roman holiday called Saturnalia!

Saturnalia, held in mid-December, is an ancient Roman festival honoring the god Saturn. Because the holiday occurred during  the winter solstice, Saturnalia celebrations were the source of a great number of the traditions we now associate with Christmas. Wreaths, gold candles, lights, etc were stragecially designed to help the gods see inside of the homes during the dark winter months. It was a week long utter bacchinalia, including everyone, even Roman slaves. Everyone was given the week off to celebrate.3 month old baby girls at their first tree trimming party.
